Saunders to Nordegg Rail Trail
Get ready to ride one of Alberta’s most scenic backcountry routes. Our Nordegg Rail Trail ATV Tour takes you along the historic rail line between Saunders and Nordegg, a stretch packed with mountain views, winding forest corridors, and that perfect mix of adventure and wide open freedom.
This is a trail with a story. Once used to haul coal and supplies through the Rockies, the old rail bed now makes for an unforgettable ATV experience, smooth, flowing sections mixed with rugged terrain that keeps things exciting without being overwhelming. Whether you’re new to riding or a seasoned throttle‑twister, this route delivers.
What to Expect:
-
A full out‑and‑back ride from Saunders to Nordegg and back again
-
Mountain and river valley scenery you just can’t get from the highway
-
Historic stops along the old rail line, including remnants of the region’s mining past
-
A relaxed, guided pace that lets you enjoy the ride, the views, and the fresh mountain air
-
Top‑notch ATVs and safety gear provided by Mud & Mountain
Where it is located:
The Saunders Staging Area, our starting point for the Rocky–Nordegg Rail Trail, is located off the Saunders–Alexo Road, about 50 km west of Rocky Mountain House, Alberta. From there, the trail follows the old rail bed that once connected the coal‑mining communities of Saunders and Nordegg, running through the heart of the Bighorn Backcountry. We take care of everything, machines, helmets, safety briefing, and guiding, so all you have to do is show up ready to ride. The Rail Trail is one of our favourite routes for a reason, it’s beautiful, it’s accessible, and it captures the spirit of Nordegg’s wild backcountry. If you’re looking for a day that blends adventure, history, and jaw‑dropping scenery, this is the tour.

Meadows Loop
(North Fork Road)
If you’re craving a ride that blends wide‑open alpine meadows with twisting forest trails, The Meadows Trail Loop is one of the best OHV routes in Alberta’s Bighorn Backcountry. This 60 km multi‑loop system sits west of Rocky Mountain House and offers that perfect “just challenging enough” terrain that keeps things fun without pushing past your comfort zone. Riders love this area for its variety, smooth dirt sections, rolling climbs, pockets of mud, and the occasional water crossing to keep things interesting. With elevations reaching 4,819 feet, the views open up into sweeping ridgelines and wildflower filled meadows that feel straight out of a postcard.
What to Expect:
-
Moderate technical riding that’s great for confident beginners and experienced riders alike
-
Multiple loop options so we can tailor the ride to the group
-
Alpine meadows, forest corridors, and big mountain scenery throughout the route
-
Seasonal wildflowers and berry patches that make summer rides extra stunning
-
Well‑established staging areas at North Fork and Saunders for easy access
Where it is located:
The Meadows Trail System is tucked into Clearwater County, accessed via North Fork Road off Highway 752. It’s a true backcountry gem, remote enough to feel wild, but well‑maintained thanks to local volunteer groups who keep the trail in great shape during the summer season. We guide you through the best loops for the day’s conditions, handle all the safety gear and prep, and keep the pace fun and relaxed. Whether you’re here for the views, the riding, or a bit of both, The Meadows delivers a classic Alberta backcountry adventure.
